1st graders learned about two artists still working today who love to use patterns! Romero Britto and Yayoi Kusama. Their fun artwork inspired us to create a pumpkin full of patterns, sitting outside at different times of the day.

1st grade students worked with clay to create cute swirly snails. They learned how to roll a ball of clay into a "coil" or a long snake, then roll it up to create a swirl shape. They added decorations and texture and will be painting them soon!

Congratulations to Mr. Biggart's 1st grade class for winning the most class points in February! As a treat, they got to create these 3D lady bugs with air-dry clay and paint, and then gave them a home on a tasty green leaf
1st graders were inspired to create polar bears after watching a video about their habitat. Using white chalk on black paper, students created these fuzzy-looking bears to put onto their watercolor background. In addition to the art, they also wrote a story about their bear, including some of the facts that they learned.

Expanding upon what students learned in the fall about geometric and organic shapes, 1st graders also learned about warm vs. cool colors. Warm colors are hot like the sun, while cool colors are cold like the ocean.

Inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's painting of sunflowers, 1st graders created their very own still life of flowers. Students first looked very closely at fake flowers in the classroom and practiced drawing them. Their observations helped them create beautiful drawings. They finished it up with an outline of black oil pastel and paint.
